Bay Village Democratic Club, at the 47th Annual Academic Achievement Program, Bay High School May 27, 2008
This Bay Village Democratic Club scholarship is awarded to a young women and young man whose course of studies and essay indicates a keen awareness of democracy in America.
Tonight the awards go to Michelle Kowalski and Robert Rossman.
Members of the Bay Village Democratic Club believe we need to advocate greater public participation in government and to support the study of government and history.
This year’s essay topic was “The Vital Importance of the November Presidential Election for America and the World”
This year the club received essays from 7 applicants.
Michelle’s essay focused on the probability of a democratic candidate winning the election and how either Obama or Clinton will be powerful leaders as well as inspirations for generations to come. Michelle recognized the need for civil service reforms; economic reforms that will focus on the mortgage crisis; and the need to provide universal health care.
Robert’s essay showed concern about the economic hardships; the large gap between rich and poor; the need for social and economic reforms that will help the lower and middle class; the need to reduce excessive non-discretionary military spending; and the need to improve our image abroad by in part bringing our troops home from Iraq.
I am pleased to present these scholarship certificates on behalf of the Bay Village Democratic Club to Michelle Kawolski and Robert Rossman and wish them well in their future studies.
We will welcome you to our next club meeting to be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at 7pm at the Bay Library. The recipients are invited to read their essays and formally receive their scholarship award checks.
Congratulations to Michelle and Robert.
